Student perceptions of PrEP in an advanced HIV elective

Background: The United States (U.S.) Centres for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that over one million U.S. adults could benefit from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), but only 90,000 PrEP prescriptions are being filled annually. Pharmacists well-positioned to offer PrEP, a lack of awareness knowledge about HIV has been limitation. This study was designed evaluate the knowledge, confidence, perceptions pharmacy students towards use in high-risk populations before after receiving PEP module two-credit hour Advanced Elective course. Methods: Faculty an course implemented evaluated impact on student attitudes 2020. Results: Participation led significant increase pharmacist confidence offering patient education regarding risk mitigation counselling, accurately ordering labs, monitoring patients taking medication therapy management. Additionally, shows decreased stigma negative individuals. Conclusion: Integration increased providing services while reducing those with HIV.
